Bridge MeidLine
Integrative urban space as a connecting element
The MeidLine bridge between Schedifkaplatz and Hohenbergstraße in Vienna-Meidling is designed as a new, integrative urban space. It picks up on the historical context of the site, interprets it in a contemporary way and expands it with a variety of possible uses. The bridge connects neighbourhoods and green spaces, creates and functions as a high-quality open space.

Bridge with a vision
The bridge offers sweeping views. On one side there is a view of the Gloriette, on the other a striking city view from the Schedifkapark to the Skyline at the main railway station. These views make the crossing an unforgettable experience. A well-thought-out lighting concept prevents any areas of fear both under and on the bridge. Underneath the bridge, slimming and lighting conveys a sense of security, while post-top lamps and luminaires integrated into street furniture provide pleasant lighting conditions.

Statement of the jury
"The project reacts to the existing urban planning situation in a self-confident manner and connects the highly differentiated urban spaces with a clearly structured bridge. The promenade-like construction, consisting of two straight-lined bridge sections, reacts differently in its width development to the respective spatial situations of the path. The positioning of the ramps and stairs is comprehensible. The building links the existing pedestrian routes well, and the access situation at Schedifkaplatz is particularly appreciated."

Under the canopy
The concept protects and enlarges the existing tree population by planting additional trees. The historic avenue on Hohenbergstraße will be continued on the bridge. The green bridge avenue connects the two districts by linking the existing green spaces. The parks on both sides integrate the bridge into the urban landscape. ‘Unterm Kronendach’ (Under the Canopy) on Schedifkaplatz offers a multifunctional meeting place with natural shade. On Hohenbergstraße, the ‘water park’ with a sunbathing lawn and water biotope improves the microclimate and offers relaxation. Climate-resistant tree species and perennials improve the microclimate and promote biodiversity. Principles of circular economy are taken into account through the reuse of excavated soil and wood material.
